For those who've known Carl and I for a while, you'll know I'm never really surprised when I get home and see pictures or hear stories about what Carl & Connor did together while I was gone. For instance, when I took my first baby-less trip to a Girls' Night Out when Connor was 9 weeks old and I returned to find THESE on our camera along with Carl's explanation:
"We were playing warriors..."
"in the jungle..."
Thus, while the following story is amusing, it holds no surprise for me. Coming home from another much-needed Girls' Night Out, Carl informed me that he had single-handedly taken on potty training with Connor. The surprise came only in the fact that we had talked about waiting until the new baby arrives before embarking on such a journey with Connor but Carl explained that he and Connor talked about it and he explained how using the potty works and Connor wanted to give it a try so Carl stripped him down and they gave it the old college try. Boys.
I reaffirmed my thinking with Carl, that I would hate to have to potty train Connor twice if he did any sort of regressing once the new baby arrived and the subject was sort of dropped, or at least not actively pursued...that is until tonight when Connor took Carl's hand and led him to the bathroom and said something that probably passed for potty. Carl willingly obliged and lo and behold, not five minutes later, Connor did his business in the potty, his diaper dry as can be! This brings me to the second purpose of this post...I am now in need of a potty training chair or seat and could use your opinions. So far I've seen these as my best options: What's worked for you experienced moms out there? Any tips or advice on potty training "tools" and methods would be greatly appreciated!!

I would suggest the snap on toilet seat because who really wants another toilet to clean. I used the toilet seat one for E but T and M just learned to go in the regular toilet. That's exciting that he wants to go and as for regression when the baby comes I had that same thought because M had just learned to go but we kept pointing out that whenever H had dirtied a diaper that it was so gross and that luckily she knew how to use the toilet. It seemed to work and buying only one set of diapers is always better :).
HAHA. Conor is a definite MANLY WARRIOR. I think I may see a strand of chest hair there.
But wow, congrats to him!
So, as I see it, in my very unexperienced opinion, both of those options have their benefits.
Option 1? He can go in and use it himself without you worrying about him falling in head first trying to crawl up on the real-deal.
Option 2? Yeah I'm thinking changing a diaper would be just as much of a pain (if not less) than having to clean out that thing. So being able to just flush and call it good (and maybe have to wipe off the seat) might be worth him falling in head first a couple times. Ah, the love of a motha.
Carl is great! You need him to pass his creativity to Brian. Because I think Brian will be playing dress-up and having tea parties.
wow..is that some sort of record? That's the earliest (in age) I've heard of a little boy being potty trained! Great job Carl on those manly instints!
Aren't dad's great?
My only advice about potty training is, make sure he is ready or you will go crazy with cleanups! They learn when they want to. Some I have started around 18 mo. but it seems they all finish around 2 1/2-3 no matter the technique I used.
Good Luck don't be afraid to wait a little longer!
I liked the ones you put on your toilet better. Tyler used both but the little potty only lasted for the first few weeks then he wanted to be on the big one. Plus he'll learn to stand soon enough and need the big toilet with a stool anyway! And the cleaning out of the other one is fine when it's just pee....I'll let you wonder how it is when it's more than that! :) good luck!!
Hi Kristen! Glad I popped on over to check out your blog. :) Congrats on the potty training. I prefer the seats where the child sits directly on the realy potty (who likes emptying bowls?), but some kids don't like to sit up that high when they're first learning.
Here's my only other two cents. Some people think this is kindof gross, but when we we're out and about for long periods of time this was helpful. (Brighton was a no-notice, can't-wait kind of kid.) If you have one of those little toilets, you can put in the back of your car along with some plastic grocery bags or gallon ziplocks that fit over the inner bowl. Then, if your son has to go NOW, you're ready and cleanup is easy peasy. Good luck!
